Spruce CBD Company History

Spruce CBD is one of the newer entrants to the CBD industry, having been founded in 2018. This family-run business operates out of Raleigh, NC, with a EU office based in Northern Ireland.

The founders of Spruce CBD feel that modern medicine is broken. Their mission is to provide lab-grade quality CBD oils that really work, and present CBD as a suitable alternative to traditional pharmaceutical medication.

Moreover, they aim to stand out as a CBD brand focused on quality above all else. As such, the company uses no artificial flavors or additives to their products, and sources their hemp from local farms. Their products, while limited in selection, all offer a much higher potency than your average CBD product.

Spruce CBD provides details of their hemp and CBD production methods online, as well as their contact information. Other than that, however, there is limited information about the company’s founders and current leadership.

Hemp Farming and Sourcing Practices

Spruce CBD sources their hemp from two family-owned farms in Colorado and Kentucky. Their hemp is 100% pesticide-free and sustainably farmed.

To extract their CBD oil from the hemp plant, Spruce CBD uses moonshine as a natural solvent. Natural solvent extraction is a common extraction method for CBD. It uses ethanol as a natural solvent to separate the CBD from the plant material. The resulting combination contains the CBD oil with the solvent. Then the ethanol evaporates, leaving just the pure hemp extract behind.

Natural solvent extraction, like the method Spruce CBD uses, is an efficient and safe CBD extraction method. The only thing to be aware of with this method is that chlorophyll may be present in the final product. Chlorophyll is absolutely safe, and a natural part of the plant, but it can lend an unpleasant taste to the CBD oil.

Finally, Spruce CBD sends all of their products to an independent third-party lab for testing and analysis.

Spruce CBD Product Selection

Spruce CBD offers two types of products: a full-spectrum tincture, and a full-spectrum CBD topical. Both use 100% natural ingredients, are sourced from locally grown hemp, and are third-party lab tested for safety and cannabinoid content.

As full-spectrum oils, Spruce CBD products will contain other cannabinoids besides CBD, such as CBC, CBN, and THC. Many people prefer full-spectrum CBD, as the presence of other cannabinoids may enable the CBD to be more effective at providing relief. However, some people have concerns about the presence of THC.

To alleviate those concerns, Spruce CBD oils contain 0.3% THC or less. This ensures that their products are 100% legal throughout the U.S., and that they will not produce a high.

Spruce CBD recommends using their CBD oils twice daily (once in the morning and once before bed). To ensure a maximum shelf life, products should be stored in a cool, dry place away from light.

CBD Tinctures

Spruce CBD offers two CBD oil tinctures: a moderate-strength 750mg oil tincture and a maximum-strength 2400mg oil. Spruce CBD recommends the 750mg oil for those who are new to CBD, while more experienced users (particularly those coping with more severe symptoms who are aware of their dosage needs) can use the maximum-strength oil.

The 2400mg oil tincture contains no added ingredients, flavoring, or colors. It is the full-spectrum CBD extract with a base of organic hemp seed oil, and nothing else—ensuring a high level of potency and efficacy. Because the 750mg oil tincture caters to those new to CBD, it also includes natural peppermint flavoring to mask the earthy taste of hemp.

To use either tincture, Spruce CBD recommends a twice-daily dose of 1 full dropper, which should be applied under the tongue and held for 60 seconds before swallowing. A full dropper contains either a dose of 25mg or 80mg of CBD, depending on the strength you chose. Since the droppers are graduated, you can easily measure out a different dose if needed. If you don’t notice improvement within 3 days of starting your regimen, Spruce CBD suggests increasing the dose.

CBD Topicals

Spruce CBD also sells a CBD topical cream, available in a single 300mg strength. The CBD cream should be applied as needed over the skin of the affected area.

The Spruce CBD topical is naturally scented using plant-derived scents. Additional ingredients include mineral oil, petrolatum, glycerin, microcrystalline wax, lanolin alcohol, paraffin, panthenol, magnesium sulfate, decyl oleate, octyldodecanol, aluminum stearates, citric acid, magnesium stearate, methylchloroisothiazolinone, and methylisothiazolinone.

Product Selection

As a new CBD brand dedicated to quality, Spruce CBD currently offers a small product line. While limited in its variety, the minimal number of products makes it very easy for users to hone in on the specific product they need. There is an all-natural high-strength tincture, a flavored lower-strength tincture, and a topical.

The tinctures come in two strengths, which are designed to capture both ends of the CBD user spectrum: newbies and those who use CBD for general wellness, as well as experienced users and those who need to cope with a chronic condition.

The topical cream can supplement a daily tincture regimen for those who cope with pain on a regular or occasional basis, such as during an arthritis flare or after intense exercise.

These three products will appeal to a wide range of users, but Spruce CBD does lack certain products that some may find useful. There are no CBD vape oils, THC-free oils, or travel-ready options like CBD capsules or gummies. Perhaps as the brand expands, we will see more of these options made available.

As a family business, Spruce CBD partners with other family-run businesses to source their hemp. Their organic hemp is grown on two, family-run farms in Kentucky and Colorado.

Spruce CBD works with ProVerde Laboratories to test each batch of their products for safety and to confirm their cannabinoid profile. However, the only report they currently have posted on their website is for the lower-strength 750mg oil. And while the lab results are available via a PDF on their website, you do have to do a bit of digging to find them.

The company says you can always email them to receive the latest copy of batch results, but we’d like to see more transparency from them regarding their test results. Ideally, they would make the lab results for all of their products easily searchable and available for download on the website.

Given their commitment to quality, it’s no surprise that all of Spruce CBD’s products contain a high potency of CBD. Their two tinctures are formulated to address two distinct types of users.

The lower-strength 750mg formula is made for those who are new to CBD, and not sure what their dose should be. The suggested serving size of 25mg is a good introductory dose for most people. If it’s too low (or too high), users can easily modify their dose using the graduated dropper as a guide. This formula is also flavored with natural peppermint to make the introduction to CBD oil a more palatable experience.

At 2400mg, the higher-strength formula provides a much more potent dose of 80mg per dropper. This is ideal for more experienced users who know they need a higher amount of CBD to manage more severe, chronic symptoms.

Spruce CBD knows taste can be an issue with CBD. That’s why they’ve flavored their lower-strength 750mg oil with natural peppermint. This lends the oil a nice taste which helps people get used to taking CBD.

However, Spruce CBD is also aware that some people prefer their CBD oil to be unflavored and as pure as possible. For these folks, their all-natural 2400mg oil is the better option.

Because Spruce CBD uses the ethanol extraction method, customers should be aware that either oil may have a slightly more unpleasant taste than other CBD oils they’ve tried from other brands, simply due to the presence of chlorophyll.

Ordering and Shipping Process

Placing an order on the Spruce CBD website is a relatively straightforward process, but we identified a few hiccups which may create an issue for some customers, such as:

  • Spruce CBD says free shipping is available with some qualifying orders in the U.S., but it’s not clear until you add items to your cart whether or not you will be eligible to receive it.
  • The company also claims that expedited shipping options are available, but there was no option to choose these at checkout.
  • Spruce CBD only accepts Visa credit cards as payment.
  • Finally, not all products may be available. For example, at the time of writing, the topical CBD cream was out of stock for another 2 weeks, although you could place an order on backorder.

Fortunately, once your order is processed, you should receive it fairly quickly. Orders placed before 9:30am Eastern are shipped out that same business day, while other orders are shipped out the next business day. Once shipped, orders should arrive within 2 to 4 business days via USPS First Class.

Customer Service

The Spruce CBD customer service team is available weekdays 9am to 5pm Eastern, via phone, email, web form, or Facebook Messenger.

Spruce CBD is unique for its generous return policy. Any product can be returned for any reason within the first 30 days, as long as it’s unopened and still in its original packaging. As for first-time customers, they can return a product even if they used the entire container. While not termed this way, it’s essentially a 30-day free trial.

In either scenario, the customer needs to request a Return Merchandise Authorization (RMA) number from the Spruce CBD Customer Service team, and they’ll also need to pay the cost of shipping.

At $0.11 to $0.13 per mg, Spruce CBD offers high-quality CBD oils for a very reasonable price.

As a small business, the company does not offer a lot of perks that you’ll typically find with larger CBD brands, like a customer rewards program, promotional discounts, or a massive product selection. However, the company’s commitment to quality, combined with their mid-range pricing, makes this brand an attractive option for those interested in full-spectrum CBD tinctures or topicals.
