Receptra Naturals Company History

Receptra Naturals is based in Colorado, as are the local farms they partner with to source their hemp. The company also has a UK office in Manchester, England.

Receptra Naturals engages in various philanthropic efforts through their Receptra Gives program. For example, in 2019, they’ve partnered with Trees for the Future. Receptra Naturals has committed to donating 1 tree for every order placed on their website, with the goal of planting 25,000 trees this year. Previous partner organizations have included Mission K9 and Boarding for Breast Cancer.

Receptra Naturals operates a regular blog and maintains an active presence on social media, where they share CBD industry news, recipes, and more resources about how to enjoy the various benefits of CBD and incorporate it into your lifestyle. There is very limited information about the company leadership online.

Hemp Farming and Sourcing Practices

Receptra Naturals partners with local Colorado farmers to source their hemp. All of their CBD oils are extracted from 100% organic hemp. The farmers use sustainable farming practices, such as using ladybugs to keep out pests and rain to irrigate the soil. No chemicals are used throughout any part of the process.

Receptra Naturals stands out for harvesting their hemp by hand. Once the plants are fully grown, the hemp is hand-shucked by farmers, who delicately separate and remove the flower from the rest of the plant (the concentration of CBD is highest in the flowers and buds of the hemp plant). Performing this process by hand ensures machines don’t cause unnecessary strain to the plant, which can result in an overly fatty oil with a strong, unpleasant flavor and high chlorophyll content.

The plants are then sun-dried, before undergoing a cold ethanol extraction process to create the CBD oil. This is similar to the process used for many food products like vanilla extract. The dried flowers are soaked with food grade ethanol. Once the ethanol evaporates, only the extract remains. Finally, the extracts are tested by both in-house and third-party labs to ensure potency and purity.

Receptra Naturals Product Selection

With the exception of their 0% THC topical and tincture, all Receptra Naturals products are full-spectrum CBD extracts. As such, their CBD oils have a rich cannabinoid, amino acid, vitamin, and terpene profile.

Terpenes give the hemp plant its distinct aroma and flavor, and evidence suggests they may also provide distinct health benefits of their own. Receptra Naturals has formulated their CBD oils to maintain a strong presence of certain terpenes associated with brain, digestive, and immune system health, including beta-caryophyllene, beta-myrcene, d-limonene, linalool, and eucalyptol.

Full-spectrum CBD oils are often preferred by users, as the presence of these natural plant materials is believed to enhance the effectiveness of the CBD. This effect is known as “the entourage effect,” and while it’s not definitively proven, there have been a handful of studies suggesting its existence.

As all-natural products, Receptra Naturals tinctures expire 18 months after production. For best results, the topicals should be used within 6 months and should be stored at room temperature.

CBD Tinctures

Receptra Naturals offers CBD tinctures in two formulas, or “blends”: Original and Performance.

The Original Blend combines CBD with a base of MCT oil, mixed with sunflower oil. This blend has a smaller list of ingredients, making it well-suited to those taking CBD for general wellness or for chronic symptom management. Users can choose between an unflavored version, or a Fresh Berry flavor.

The Original Blend is available in two concentrations, which each offer a different potency of CBD. The Prime contains 22mg of CBD per serving, while the Plus contains 44mg of CBD per serving.

The Performance Blend combines CBD with turmeric, a natural anti-inflammatory and antioxidant—ideal for supporting an active lifestyle, boosting energy and muscle recovery. The hemp extract uses MCT oil as a base and comes in a Mint or Fresh Berry flavor. Additional ingredients include hemp seed oil, avocado oil, extra virgin olive oil, grapeseed oil, and sunflower oil.

The Performance Blend is available in three concentrations. The Active contains 15mg of CBD per serving, the Elite contains 30mg of CBD per serving, and the Pro contains 60mg of CBD per serving, making it the most potent of all Receptra Naturals tinctures.

The Elite concentration is also available in a THC-free version. This is still a broad-spectrum blend that contains other cannabinoids and terpenes of the Receptra Naturals hemp extract—just without any THC.

We know that’s a lot of nomenclature and serving sizes to take in, so we’ve put together a chart that summarizes the serving size for each tincture:

CBD per ServingConcentrationFormula/Blend
15mgActivePerformance Blend
22mgPrimeOriginal Blend
30mgElitePerformance Blend
44mgPlusOriginal Blend
60mgProPerformance Blend

Each Receptra Naturals tincture comes in three sizes (15ml, 30ml, and 60ml). They all contain the same concentration of CBD. You simply get more serving sizes with a larger bottle, for a lower price.

To use their tinctures, Receptra Naturals recommends shaking well, before placing a dose under your tongue, holding for up to 30 seconds, and swallowing. Adults may take one full dropper between 1 to 3 times daily. A serving is one full dropper, although the droppers are graduated so you can easily adjust the dose as needed.

CBD Topicals

Receptra Naturals offers four CBD topicals:

  • Body Butter: This 3.25oz tub packs in 400mg of CBD (with MCT oil as a base) along with a long list of essential oils and antioxidants formulated to moisturize and rejuvenate your skin. Ingredients include aloe vera juice, shea butter, golden jojoba oil, grapeseed oil, coconut oil, mango butter, beeswax, St. John’s Wort, Vitamin E, and tangerine, jasmine, frankincense, lemon, and ylang ylang essential oils. You can apply this liberally over your skin as a daily moisturizer, or use for targeted relief on blemishes or irritated or dry areas.
  • Lip Balm: Your lips can enjoy the same moisturizing relief with Receptra Naturals lip balm. This contains 15mg of CBD (with golden jojoba oil as a base for the hemp extract) along with beeswax, shorea butter, vitamin E, avocado oil, hemp seed oil, sunflower oil, and organic natural flavoring.
  • Targeted Topical: This Receptra Naturals topical focuses on relieving pain and inflammation, as opposed to soothing and restoring skin like their body butter. The Targeted Topical should be massaged directly onto aching and irritated muscles, providing quick relief and aiding in exercise recovery. This balm includes CBD (using jojoba oil as a base for the hemp extract), along with shea butter, shorea butter, coconut oil, mango butter, beeswax, vitamin E, and arnica, jasmine and ylang-ylang essential oils. The Targete Topical comes in two sizes: a 1.25oz tub containing 400mg of CBD, and a larger 2.5oz tub containing 800mg of CBD.
  • Targeted Topical 0% THC: Receptra Naturals also offers a THC-free version of their Targeted Topical. This is the same muscle relief balm, but without any THC. The 0% THC version is only available in the 400mg (1.25oz) container.

CBD Pet Products

Receptra Naturals also sells CBD tinctures for pets. The ingredients list for these is simple: it’s simply the hemp extract with a base of MCT oil—so they’re organic, vegan, and non-GMO. The pet oil is available in two formulas: Original and Plus (not to be confused with the names of their human tinctures).

  • At 15mg of CBD per serving, the Original Formula is best for small breeds or pets with more mild symptoms. This formula is available in the same three sizes as the human tinctures: 15ml, 30ml, and 60ml.
  • At 22mg of CBD per serving, the Plus Formula is best for large breeds or pets with more severe symptoms. This formula is only available in the 750mg (30ml) size.

Lik their human tinctures, the pet oils should be shaken well before consumed. You can add the drops directly to your dog’s tongue or gums, or mix it into their food. Receptra Naturals recommends starting with 3 to 4 drops and increasing from there until you find the best dose, using your pet’s weight as a guide:

  • Under 15 pounds: ¼ dropper
  • 15-30 pounds: ½ dropper
  • 30-45 pounds: ¾ dropper
  • 45 pounds and up: 1 dropper or more

Product Selection

For those interested in CBD tinctures and topicals, Receptra Naturals offers a large selection of concentrations to suit varying dosage needs. However, choosing among the different blends and sizes can be confusing, especially for those new to CBD who may not know their ideal dose yet. As such, Receptra Naturals may be a better fit for those more experienced with taking CBD,

Also, not all versions are available in the advertised flavor. For example, at the time of writing, none of the Mint flavors were in stock, and the unflavored version of the Prime tincture was only available in the 750mg (30ml) size.

Receptra Naturals sources their hemp from local Colorado farms who practice 100% organic farming methods. All of their CBD extracts are 100% organic, and most of the included ingredients are all-natural (although it’s not specified whether they are also organic).

Receptra Naturals shares the full ingredient label for each variation of their products on the product page. Receptra Naturals also offers a sample of their lab results on the product page, although this is a bit misleading. It’s truly just a “sample” of the latest lab result. To view the actual, most recent lab result for each batch of their products, you need to visit their Certificate of Analysis page.

Once there, you can browse the latest lab results for each product. You can also look up the result for the specific product you ordered, by entering the code on your product label into the search box. Receptra Naturals goes beyond simply displaying the test results. They are also very thorough in explaining each element listed on the lab certificate, in an expandable FAQ section on the bottom of the page.

However, while the company claims to use third-party labs, they only display the test results performed by their in-house lab. We’d like to see more transparency from Receptra Naturals by displaying the third-party lab results, as well as identifying the specific third-party labs they use.

Receptra Naturals is unique for their dedication to hand-shucking their hemp, as opposed to using the machine harvesting process favored by many CBD brands. This allows them to focus exclusively on using the hemp plant’s flower for their extract (which contains the highest concentration of CBD), as opposed to the seeds, stems or stalks (which contain very little CBD). As a result, their tinctures contain a high concentration of CBD.

It should also be noted that as full-spectrum extracts, their CBD pet oils also contain a small amount of THC. While the amount is always legal (0.3% or less), pets can be more sensitive to THC than we are, simply due to differences in our endocannabinoid systems. It may be best to consult your veterinarian first before giving these CBD oils to your pet.

Receptra Naturals uses an ethanol extraction process, which is extremely safe and quite efficient for extracting CBD. However, this extraction method does have one major downside: chlorophyll is often present in the final hemp extract. As a natural part of the plant, chlorophyll is safe and harmless, but it can lend CBD oils an unpleasant taste.

Reviewers note that the Receptra Naturals tinctures do have a stronger, more “hempy” taste, even with the mint and berry flavors.
