How to Buy CBD Oil

With the passing of the 2018 Farm Bill, CBD became legal nationwide. Since then, CBD tinctures, creams, candies, and more keep popping up in stores across the country.

CBD is increasingly omnipresent, but it’s still not available everywhere. Whether you prefer to purchase from home or in-store, here’s your guide to finding and buying CBD oil near you.

Where Can You Buy CBD?

You can find CBD in a number of places, including:

  • Manufacturer websites and retail locations
  • Large eCommerce sites
  • Big box stores
  • Health and wellness shops
  • Marijuana dispensaries

We review all of these below.

CBD Manufacturer Websites

The vast majority of companies who sell CBD oils make their products available for purchase on their website. Often, buying direct from the manufacturer is your best bet for enjoying the best price.  Plus, many CBD brands provide free shipping and share promo codes on their website, so you can save even more. Most manufacturers offer customer service over the phone, email, and live chat so they can answer any questions you have while ordering from their website. on your purchase.

CBD Manufacturer Stores and Retail Partners

Many CBD brands partner with local retailers and wholesalers to sell their products. Typically, these include herbal shops, vitamin stores, and other health and wellness businesses. Some even operate their own branded retail locations. The benefit of purchasing through a retail location, or a retail partner, is that you can ask the in-store salespeople for recommendations on the best product for you.

To find your favorite CBD brand from a local retailer, first visit the company’s website. If they sell their products at brick-and-mortar stores, they will have a Store Locator page on their website. There, you can scroll through a list of all of their locations, or enter your zip code to find the nearest retailer near you.

CBD eCommerce Marketplaces

There are a handful of eCommerce marketplaces dedicated to selling CBD products, including Direct CBD Online, Healthy Hemp Outlet, CBD Store, Healthy Hemp Oil, and CBD Outlet Online. These sites sell CBD oils from a large number of brands, allowing you to purchase products from different brands more efficiently. Also, the larger size of these websites may enable them to offer additional promotions a smaller, individual CBD brand can’t offer, like free shipping.

Big Box Stores

Even brand name, big box stores are starting to sell CBD. In April of 2019, Walgreens started selling CBD creams, patches, and sprays in 1,500 stores across nine states. Around the same time, CVS rolled out their selection CBD creams, sprays, roll-ons, and salves to 800 stores in eight stores the same month. You can buy CBD tinctures, capsules, gummies and more from Walmart. Rumors are circulating that Target will be offering CBD oils soon, too.

Marijuana Dispensaries

In states where marijuana is legal for recreational or medicinal use, dispensaries may sell CBD oils in addition to their marijuana-based products. When purchasing CBD oil from a dispensary, the most important thing to keep in mind is the strain of cannabis the product comes from.

The 2018 Farm Bill legalized any CBD oils sourced from hemp, which describes the majority of CBD products (since hemp naturally contains higher amounts of CBD). However, CBD oil can also be extracted from marijuana, so while they’re more rare, you can find marijuana-based CBD oils. Some people prefer these because they want more THC content in their CBD oil (as traditional, hemp-based CBD oils will always contain 0.3% or less).

Whatever your preference, you’ll want to confirm with the salesperson whether the CBD oil was extracted from marijuana or hemp, so you know whether to expect a high when using it.

Can You Buy CBD Oil at Amazon?

Despite the large number of physical and online stores embracing CBD, surprisingly, you still cannot buy CBD oil on Amazon. You also can’t buy CBD oil at Whole Foods, since they’re owned by Amazon.

Under their seller policies, Amazon prohibits products containing CBD, including full-spectrum hemp oil and rich hemp oil, from being sold on their website.

You can search for “CBD oil” and similar products on Amazon, and Amazon will deliver a list of search results, but the products you see here are actually hemp seed oil. While this a great health supplement for your skin and heart health, it contains virtually no CBD and will not provide any of the benefits of CBD

5 Tips for Buying Quality CBD Oil

Whether you buy CBD oil directly from the brand, your local wellness store, or a big box pharmacy, follow these steps to ensure that what you buy is a high-quality, authentic CBD oil.

1. Speak with your doctor first.

CBD can interact negatively with some medications, over-the-counter otherwise, so it’s best to consult a doctor before starting CBD. They can provide recommendations for a starting dose, and different types of products to use, based on your personal health history. Your doctor can be particularly helpful if you are looking to use CBD to treat specific symptoms, like chronic pain or insomnia.

2. Know what you’re looking for.

CBD oil touts a variety of benefits, but some products and some dosage amounts may not be effective for you. Know what your ideal dosage of CBD is, so you can look for a product that matches your dosage needs.

CBD oil products come in all shapes and forms, from flavorless capsules to facial serums. You can even buy CBD for your pet. Know what kind of product you want, so you can look for that in the store.

3. Read the label carefully.

The label of a CBD oil tells you a lot of things, including:

  • The total concentration of CBD, as well as the amount of CBD per serving
  • What other ingredients are in the product, so you can assess its overall safety
  • Instructions for how to use the product
  • The expiration date, so you know when the product is no longer safe to use or effective
  • How to safely store the product to ensure a maximum lifespan

All of these are important to know when evaluating whether a CBD oil will be helpful for you.

4. Make sure you understand how to use the product.

CBD tinctures and vape oils are popular as they offer high bioavailability, but they can be tricky for new users to understand. Read through a brand’s FAQ page or speak to the sales clerk to make sure you understand how to apply the CBD oil. You’ll want to know what constitutes a serving size, how often you should use the CBD oil, whether it should be taken at a certain time of day, and if there are any risks or benefits.

5. Review the brand’s lab results.

Many reputable CBD brands submit their oils to third-party labs for testing, both to confirm the potency of the CBD oil and to assess its safety. Before buying a CBD oil, make sure you can access the lab results for your product’s specific batch, either by looking them up on the website or contacting customer service.

CBD brands you can trust will have nothing to hide. They’ll take pride in the potency and quality of their CBD oils, and they’ll make those test results readily accessible to customers.
