Charlotte’s Web Company History
Charlotte’s Web has a unique origin story among CBD brands. In the early 2010s, an unlikely meetup occurred between a group of brothers-turned-medical-marijuana-growers and a young girl with Dravet Syndrome, a rare and severe form of pediatric epilepsy. The girl was named Charlotte.
As Charlotte’s weekly seizure numbers grew into the hundreds, her parents became desperate for answers. Traditional medication wasn’t effective. A ketogenic diet nearly stopped the seizures, but it also caused significant loss of bone mass. They had heard stories about the benefits of medical cannabis for epilepsy. They secured an extract, and within a week of her first dose, Charlotte’s seizures drastically decreased. Soon Charlotte’s parents sought out medical marijuana dispensaries so they could establish a long-term supply of cannabis oil for Charlotte.
This is when they met the Stanley Brothers—Joel, Jesse, Jon, Jordan, Jared, Josh, and Austin—seven Colorado brothers who grew medical marijuana together. The brothers got to work developing a strain of medical marijuana that had a high CBD: low THC ratio, allowing children like Charlotte to enjoy the therapeutic, antiepileptic effects of cannabis without the psychoactive high of THC.
Charlotte went from experiencing nearly 50 seizures per day to less than a handful per month. Unlike the other therapies she tried, her seizure relief persisted for years with few side effects. As Charlotte’s success story made national news, other families tried the strain to similar success, leading the brothers to name it after her: Charlotte’s Web.
In 2018, the FDA approved the first drug containing CBD, Epidiolex, which is prescribed to children with rare and severe forms of epilepsy. This milestone is in part due to successful case studies like Charlotte’s, as well as a wealth of clinical research supporting the use of CBD for relieving seizures.
In addition to producing medical-grade CBD oil, the Stanley brothers remain committed to philanthropic causes that harken back to the company’s early days. They donate 2% of all pre-tax revenue to charitable organizations that serve women, veterans, and first responders. They also founded Realm of Caring, a nonprofit devoted to medical cannabis research, policy advocacy, and education. Realm of Caring also provides financial support and resources for children and families who can’t afford medical cannabis treatment.
Hemp Farming and Sourcing Practices
Charlotte’s Web CBD products are sourced from hemp grown on family-owned farms in Colorado, Oregon, and Kentucky. It’s important to note that Charlotte’s Web hemp is not yet organic-certified. However, all of the pesticides, mildewcides, and herbicides they use are 100% organic.
Charlotte’s Web uses a CO2 extraction process to create their CBD oils. Of the four commonly used methods for CBD extraction, this is the safest and most efficient for consistently producing a high concentration of CBD.
After extraction, the oils undergo several stages of filtration to remove any plant material. Then the oils are tested by the Charlotte’s Web in-house lab to assess the amount of CBD and other cannabinoids, and ensure no pesticides, heavy metals, or toxic residual solvents are present. While Charlotte’s Web does not use a third-party lab to test their products (which we would prefer), they are very transparent about providing specific safety results—down to the individual batch—for each of the products they sell.
Charlotte’s Web CBD Product Selection
Except for their CBD isolates, all Charlotte’s Web CBD oils are full-spectrum, whole-plant hemp extracts. In addition to CBD, they also contain beneficial cannabinoids, terpenes, and flavonoids naturally produced by the hemp plant.
No additives or dyes are added to the product, so the color of the oil may vary slightly from batch to batch. Each product is shipped with a batch number, allowing customers to look up batch reports for their specific product on the website.
In addition to Charlotte’s Web CBD products, fans of the brand can also buy women’s or men’s sweatshirts.

Charlotte’s Web oil tinctures come in three main strengths: 6.65mg/ml (Full Strength), 16.65mg/ml (Extra Strength), and 50mg/ml (Original Formula). Each contains CBD and over 80 beneficial phytocannabinoids. The oil is available in two flavors which mask the taste of CBD.
- The Olive Oil flavor contains hemp extract and organic extra virgin olive oil.
- The Mint Chocolate flavor contains hemp extract, fractionated coconut oil, and natural flavoring from organic sunflower oil.
Bottles are available in 30ml and 100ml sizes. Although they cost more upfront, the larger bottles and higher concentrations have a lower cost per mg.
There is an additional, Maximum Strength formula that contains 60mg of CBD per milliliter, but it’s only available in retail locations.
The same high-potency CBD oil NuLeaf Naturals makes for humans is also available for pets, in three different bottle sizes. Safe for both dogs and cats, they recommend giving your pet 2 to 3 drops for every 20 pounds of their body weight, once or twice daily.
In addition to their full-spectrum tinctures, Charlotte’s Web also offers a 100% THC-free product in their CBD isolate. The isolate contains hemp extract and fractionated coconut oil. Unlike the full-spectrum tinctures, the CBD isolate is unflavored and will maintain the earthy hemp flavor. After the CO2 extraction, CBD isolates go under an additional “proprietary process” to remove everything except the CBD from the hemp extract.
Charlotte’s Web CBD capsules are available in two main strengths: 8mg (Full Strength) and 18mg (Extra Strength). In addition to the full-spectrum hemp extract, the capsules also contain rice bran, maltodextrin, microcrystalline cellulose, cellulose, and fractionated coconut oil. They can be purchased in 30- or 60-count bottles.
Charlotte’s Web recommends taking 1 or 2 capsules daily to manage stress, exercise recovery, and pain.
- In addition to 750mg of hemp extract, the cream also includes vitamins B5 and E, aloe, coconut oil, arnica, shea butter, and apricot kernel oil. The cream is available in unscented and scented varieties, with the scent derived from essential oils.
- The balm is available in 0.5oz and 1.5oz tins, with 300mg of hemp extract per ounce.
Nothing synthetic is included in either product, and even the container is cruelty- and BPA-free. Users recommend the cream for better-looking skin and moisturization, while the balm is better for pain relief and inflammation.
CBD Oil for Dogs
Charlotte’s Web CBD oil for dogs is full-spectrum and developed using the same CO2 extraction method as their CBD oil products for humans. Their dog CBD oil comes in two bottle sizes: 30ml and 100ml. Both contain the same concentration—16.5mg of CBD per ml—but you can get more CBD for your money by purchasing the larger bottle.
Charlotte’s Web CBD oil is designed for dogs only, to relieve anxiety as well as hip and joint pain. Each bottle comes with dosage recommendations based on your dog’s body weight, to be given once or twice daily.

Charlotte’s Web offers a decent product selection of CBD oil tinctures, isolates, capsules, topicals, and dog products. Each of their products is available in multiple sizes and strengths, allowing shoppers to zero in on the best one for their preferences and dosage needs. All of their CBD oils are non-GMO, vegan, and gluten-free.
Charlotte’s Web sources their CBD oil from locally-grown hemp in Colorado, Oregon, and Kentucky. Their hemp has been certified by the U.S. Hemp Authority for safety and legal standards. However, Charlotte’s Web hemp is not yet fully organic-certified and pesticide-free, although all of the pesticides, mildewcides, and herbicides they use are 100% organic.
Based on a proprietary blend originally designed to relieve childhood seizures, Charlotte’s Web oil tinctures are available in four strengths, which pack in between 6.65mg to 60mg of CBD per milliliter. Their CBD isolate is also quite strong, at 20 mg per milliliter.
Their products are potent, but consumers can choose a less-potent version if they’d like. For example, with their CBD capsules, customers can choose between, with a low dose 8mg formula and a high-strength 18mg version.
Charlotte’s Web stands out for offering medical-grade CBD oil in that doesn’t taste too “hempy.” All of their oils come in either mint chocolate or olive oil flavors, created through natural flavoring, to make them palatable to anyone who doesn’t love the natural earthy flavor of hemp.
They’ve also added scents to their non-edible products, such as their topicals. These can be purchased in unscented or scented versions, with the scented version being a light botanical scent derived from menthol and cinnamon essential oils.
The exceptions here are their CBD isolate, CBD oil for dogs, and CBD capsules, which are all unflavored.

Charlotte’s Web is one of the few CBD brands that sells their products in stores as well as online. They partner with retailers across the U.S. and Europe, which can be found using their Store Locator map. If you find a product is ever unavailable on their website, you can sign up to receive an email notification when it comes back in stock.
Their 30-day satisfaction guarantee is notable. If a consumer doesn’t feel a product meets their expectations, they can ship it back (shipping costs are covered by Charlotte’s Web) and receive a full refund or exchange.
There’s also the Charlotte’s Web Love Reward Program, where you can earn points for every dollar you spend on the site, and earn points for additional activities like referring new customers or subscribing to their email newsletter. Every 100 points can be redeemed for a $5 store credit.
Charlotte’s Web does a lot to create a simple and rewarding shopping process on their site. Our main gripe is their lack of third-party testing. While the brand does perform rigorous testing on all of their products, it’s not as unbiased as using a third-party lab. Further, batch reports can only be accessed using a batch number, which is on the product packaging. So, there’s no way to view a safety certificate or batch report prior to purchasing.
Charlotte’s Web sells medical-quality CBD oils in a range of potencies for a very fair price. They sweeten the deal with bulk pricing, free shipping for qualified orders, autoship discounts, and a customer rewards program. With their bulk pricing deals, you can buy four items and get a fifth free, or buy three to save 20% total off your purchase.
