Bluebird Botanicals Company History

Bluebird Botanicals was founded as Gaia Botanicals LLC in 2012 by Brandon J. Beatty, a hemp entrepreneur and cannabis advocate. The company aims to make a positive impact on the world, primarily through making hemp products more accessible.

Many cannabis brands claim to be all about promoting a cannabis-based wellness lifestyle, but some don’t do much beyond selling their products. Bluebird Botanicals actually walks the walk.

The company is very involved in hemp advocacy and policy reform, through their partnerships with trade associations, educational institutions, and nonprofit organizations. The founder and leadership team are members of the Industrial Hemp Research Foundation, ASTM International D37 Committee on Cannabis, Aims Community College Advisory Board, Hemp Industries Association, and American Herbal Products Association.

As for accessibility, Bluebird Botanicals products are shipped to customers in multiple countries. They can also be purchased in various retail locations throughout the United States. The company makes their products even more accessible through their Assistance Program, which provides discounts to low-income individuals, veterans, and those with disabilities. Finally, the company donates regularly to nonprofits like the American Cancer Society, Autism Research Institute, Global Fund for Women, Colorado Coalition for the Homeless, and more.

Bluebird Botanicals also increases education among their own customers, through their social media channels. Their blog focuses on emerging CBD trends, and tips for getting more value or use out of Bluebird Botanicals products. In their podcast, the company interviews CBD influencers, researchers, and experts.

Bluebird Botanicals operates out of Louisville, Colorado, with a UK office based in London, England.

Hemp Farming and Sourcing Practices

Bluebird Botanicals sources their hemp from local Colorado farms, with a specific focus on developing plants rich in cannabinoids and beneficial terpenes. The company uses two processes to extract their CBD oils:

  • CO2 extraction is widely considered to be the safest and most efficient extraction method for CBD oil, ensuring a consistently high concentration of CBD in the final hemp extract—free of residual solvents, toxins, or chlorophyll.
  • Ethanol extraction uses ethanol as a solvent to separate the CBD from the plant material, instead of supercritical carbon dioxide. It’s very safe and effective, like CO2 extraction, but chlorophyll is often present in the final hemp extract. While chlorophyll is safe, it can affect the taste of the CBD oil.

After extraction, the oils are sent to third-party labs for testing and analysis. Once they receive a passing grade, the products are then prepared for production following the FDA’s Current Good Manufacturing Practices (CGMPs). The Bluebird Botanicals manufacturing facilities were most recently audited by the FDA in April of 2018, and received a 99% rating.

The responsibility and sustainability Bluebird Botanicals practices extends beyond their actual hemp extract. The company was the first CBD brand to be certified glyphosate-free by The Detox Project (glyphosate is one of the world’s most-used pesticides). The company is also one of only twelve CBD brands to hold a U.S. Hemp Authority Certificate, which is awarded based on commitment to safe manufacturing standards. Their products are bioplastic recyclable and cruelty-free.

Bluebird Botanicals Product Selection

Bluebird Botanicals sells full-spectrum CBD oils that contain 10% to 99% CBD, depending on the specific product type and blend.

Being full-spectrum oils, all Bluebird Botanicals CBD has a rich cannabinoid profile, consisting of over 80 different cannabinoids (CBD, CBN, CBG, CBGA, CBCA, and CBC), terpenes, amino acids, omega 3 and 6 fatty acids, flavonoids, vitamins B and D, and more.

With the exception of their CBD isolates, all of their oils also contain trace amounts of THC (0.3% or less). Because the percentage of THC is so low, their CBD will not get you high. It’s also considered fully legal throughout the U.S.

Bluebird Botanicals offers CBD oils in three different blends:

  • Hemp Classic: This blend contains the CBD extract with organic virgin hemp seed oil as a base. Since it’s so high in fatty acids, hemp seed oil is a natural anti-inflammatory, protecting against heart disease, skin problems, and digestive issues. The Hemp Classic blend contains cannabinoids like CBC, CBG, CBG-A, CBC-A, and CBN, terpenes, omega fatty acids, amino acids, chlorophyll, and more. It’s created using the ethanol extraction method, so chlorophyll will be present.
  • Hemp Signature: This blend uses the Classic Blend, but with frankincense and cold-pressed black cumin seed oil as a base. Both frankincense and black cumin seed have been linked to boosting the immune system and relieving inflammation, so this blend may be best for those taking CBD to manage pain and other chronic issues associated with inflammation, such as arthritis, asthma, and gastrointestinal disorders. The Hemp Signature blend is created using the CO2 extraction method, so it has a better taste than the Classic.
  • Hemp Complete: This blend contains a 50/50 split of raw non-decarboxylated CBDA and heated decarboxylated CBD per ounce, with organic extra virgin olive oil as a base. The Hemp Complete blend is also infused with a steam-distilled extract of 26 hemp terpenes, flavonoids, aldehydes, and ketones. Steam distillation is not precise enough to be a cost-efficient method for extracting CBD oil, but it is quite suitable for extracting terpenes. This blend’s rich full-spectrum profile will have a more aromatic scent (due to the terpenes), and may provide a stronger “entourage effect,” due to the increased presence of cannabinoids, terpenes, and other natural plant materials from the hemp plant. This blend will also have a noticeably stronger hemp taste than the Hemp Classic. The Hemp Complete blend is created using a mix of CO2 extraction and steam distillation.

Bluebird Botanicals products have a shelf life of 500 days, as long as they are stored at room temperature, away from light or moisture.

CBD Tinctures

Bluebird Botanicals offers CBD oil tinctures in all three of their blends: Hemp Classic, Hemp Complete, and Hemp Signature.

Each blend is available in two potencies:

  • The “hemp” formula contains 250mg of CBD per ounce, which equates to a serving size of 4.2mg.
  • The “concentrated” formula contains a little over 1500mg of CBD per ounce, equating to a serving size of 25mg. To avoid confusion, the concentrated formulas are denoted with a different color label and a “6X” in the name.

The hemp formulas are designed for folks using CBD for general wellness or to cope with occasional, mild symptoms. The concentrated formulas are better for individuals who are taking CBD to deal with a chronic condition of a more moderate to severe nature, such as ongoing anxiety, insomnia, or pain. The concentrated formulas are more expensive, given their higher CBD concentrations. However, they can be the more cost-effective option for individuals managing chronic symptoms—particularly thanks to the long shelf life of Bluebird Botanicals CBD products.

Regardless of blend or formula, each tincture is available in five bottle sizes: ⅓ oz, 1oz, 2oz, 4oz, and 8oz. The only difference between the bottle sizes is the cost per mg. The concentration stays the same, but with a bigger bottle, you can save more per mg.

The suggested serving size is 15 drops, which can be taken once or twice daily. Bluebird Botanicals suggests users do not exceed more than 5 servings in any single dose. Each Bluebird Botanicals tincture is vegan, non-GMO, gluten-free, and glyphosate-free. Their oils contain no added sweeteners.

Bluebird Botanicals also sells a THC-free oil tincture, which contains 1500mg of CBD per ounce, with organic fractionated (MCT) oil as a base. Like the 6X blends, the THC-free tincture has a serving size of 25mg. Formulated using a CBD isolate, this tincture is nearly 100% CBD. Other cannabinoids make up less than 0.8% of the total cannabinoid profile, while CBD claims the other 99.2%. Unlike their CBD tinctures, Bluebird Botanicals recommends a more frequent dosing schedule for their THC-free oil—up to four times per day.

CBD Capsules

Thanks to their high terpene content, Bluebird Botanicals tinctures have a strong hemp taste. For those who don’t like the taste of hemp, Bluebird Botanicals offers a flavor-free way to take their CBD.

Their CBD capsules contain 5mg of CBD per capsule, and come in 60- and 120-count bottles. Just like their tinctures, these are gluten- and sweetener-free. However, they are not vegan-friendly, due to the use of gelatin to create the softgel capsule.

The Bluebird Botanicals capsules use the Classic blend, which contains a full-spectrum hemp extract of CBD, along with CBDV, CBDA, CBG, CBN and other cannabinoids, terpenes, and organic virgin hemp seed oil as a base.

Like their tinctures, Bluebird Botanicals also sells a higher-potency version of their capsules. Their concentrated CBD capsules contain 3 times the amount of CBD per capsule, at 15mg each. These are available in 30- and 60-count bottles.

CBD Vape Oils

Bluebird Botanicals also sells CBD vape oils, which contain 1000mg of CBD per ounce. Their vape oils are available in two bottle sizes: ⅓ oz (333mg) and 1oz (1000mg).

The Bluebird Botanicals vape oils contain 99% pure CBD isolate with a USP-grade propylene glycol/vegetable glycerine base. These vape oils should be used exclusively in vaporizer devices, not as a sublingual tincture. Because these are designed to be mixed in with your other e-liquids, they do not contain flavoring of their own.

To use a Bluebird Botanicals vape oil, you measure out a serving size, and add it to your vape cartridge using the dropper.

CBD Isolates

In its crystalline isolate form, CBD is powdery, flavorless, and odorless. CBD isolates are a great option for anyone who wants to enjoy CBD completely THC-free, people don’t like the natural taste of hemp, or those who wish to add CBD into their food or beverage.

For those interested in CBD and CBD alone, Bluebird Botanicals sells CBD isolates. These contain 96% to 99.9% of pure isolated CBD.

Bluebird Botanicals makes their isolate available wholesale as well as for personal use. The personal CBD isolate is available in four sizes, ranging from 1 to 25 mg. The bulk CBD isolate is also available in four sizes, ranging from 100g to 1,000g.

To create their CBD isolates, Bluebird Botanicals first extracts the CBD using ethanol as a solvent. Then the extract is winterized to remove fats, before it undergoes multiple rounds of evaporation to remove additional plant materials. Finally, the extract is decarboxylated and processed into the crystalline powder.

CBD for Pets

Bluebird Botanicals is committed to making CBD oil accessible to all, and that includes our furry loved ones. They’ve formulated special “companion” versions of their CBD products. These include:

  • Companion Oil: This contains a similar blend to the Hemp Classic blend. It contains 250mg of CBD per ounce, with organic hemp seed oil as a base. Bluebird Botanicals recommends a serving size of 15 drops, which can be applied directly to your pet’s food or the inside of their mouth as a tincture.
  • Companion Capsules: Recognizing that some pets may find the hempy taste of their CBD oils unpleasant, Bluebird Botanicals has also created capsules owners can give their pets. These also use the Hemp Classic blend. Each capsule contains 5mg of CBD, with a softgel made of glycerin, gelatin, and purified water. You may need to hide the capsule in your pet’s food to trick them into eating them. The Companion Capsules are sold in 60- and 120-count bottles.
  • Concentrated Companion Capsules: For pets with more severe symptoms, Bluebird Botanicals recommends their concentrated formula. Available in 30- and 60-count bottles, these contain three times the amount of CBD per capsule, at 15mg each.

The Bluebird Botanicals pet oils are safe for dogs, cats, horses, kangaroos, and chickens. However, because these contain a moderate amount of CBD, ranging from 5mg to 15mg, the serving size may need to be significantly adjusted based on your pet’s body weight. A smaller serving size is more appropriate for cats and small dogs, while a larger serving size may be required for larger dogs and horses.

Bluebird Botanicals does not provide specific dosing guidelines. Please see our guide for help finding the best dosage of CBD oil for your pet.

Product Selection

Bluebird Botanicals only offers a handful of different types of CBD products: tinctures, capsules, vape oils, isolates, and pet oils.

However, each of those products are available in different strengths, and with different cannabinoid profiles. Their various blends leverage different bases for the hemp extract (hemp seed oil, extra virgin olive oil, and MCT oil), so Bluebird Botanicals can cater to people with specific allergies or health concerns. Finally, none of their products contain artificial sweeteners. Where possible, their ingredients are organic, gluten-free, and vegan-friendly.

All in, the Bluebird Botanicals product line serves a wide range of users who may need lower or higher doses of CBD, or be interested in the benefits of particular cannabinoids and terpenes.

Having said that, the distinction between the various blends, and the lower vs. higher concentrations, can be confusing to understand at first. So, Bluebird Botanicals may be a brand better suited to more experienced users, who will be able to wade through the industry lingo and pinpoint the best formula and product for their needs.

Bluebird Botanicals sources their organic, non-GMO hemp from local Colorado farms. The company stands out for their commitment to transparency and high-quality production standards.

Bluebird Botanicals has been certified by both The Detox Project and the U.S. Hemp Authority. Both of their manufacturing facilities have received 99% ratings from the FDA (for comparison, a passing score is 70%).

They also post the lab results for every single batch of each one of their products on the website. You can find the test certificates in their searchable online Batch Database as well as on the individual product pages.

With all the different blends and formulas, it’s surprising to realize that the majority of the Bluebird Botanicals products come in a few main serving sizes: around 5mg, 15mg, and 25mg.

Of course, those serving sizes can be easily adjusted to achieve your ideal dose. However, it’s tough to figure out which product, blend, and bottle size will be best for your particular dosage needs. It doesn’t help that the key differentiators are words like “hemp,” “concentrated,” and “6x.” While “concentrated” and “6X” sound like (and are) more potent blends, the use of the word “hemp” in the lower-strength formula makes things confusing—since all the products contain hemp.

There are two main things to keep in mind when considering Bluebird Botanicals products: your ideal dose in mg, and how much you care about having other cannabinoids and terpenes present in your CBD oil. If you are new to CBD, the Hemp Classic tinctures and capsules (both in the lower-strength “hemp” formulas) are a good choice to get started. If you’ve been taking CBD for a while, you can experiment with the different blends to see which one works best for you.

None of Bluebird Botanicals products contain any added sweetener, natural or artificial. As a result, their products maintain their natural earthy hemp flavor.  In the case of their Hemp Classic and Hemp Complete blends, that taste is even stronger—due to the presence of terpenes and the use of ethanol extraction (which leaves chlorophyll behind in the final product).

Customers who don’t like the natural taste of hemp can bypass this issue by ordering the Bluebird Botanical capsules and isolates, which are both flavor-free.
